AN INTERVIEW WITH GATTO AUTHOR, IAN DUNCAN SMITH.

WHY, HOW, WHERE & WHAT?

  .

Why do you write?

Because I’ve run out of other things to do.

How do you write?

With a pen, a notebook and a laptop.

Where do you write?

In the basement of a terraced house in central Reading.

What is your writing routine?

To ramble and rewrite.

How would you describe your writing style?

To the point.

Which writers have inspired you?

Geoff Hattersley, Simon Armitage, Raymon Carver, Alice Munro, Jame Kelman and Will Self.

What are your writing ambitions?

To make some readers happy.

What are your favourite books, and why?

Zoom by Simon Armitage because it reaches out of this world.

Geoff Hattersley’s Don’t Worry because it’s brilliant.

Carver’s collection What We Talk About When We Talk About Love for its situations.

All of Alice Munro for its emotional effect.

Will Self’s Scale for its location.

Kelman’s collection Busted Scotch for its sense of drama.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Dylan said, "I learned not to give away the secrets of what worked for me." That would be my advice.

What are you working on currently?

A lot of rambling notes that I hope to make into a novel, a short story or some poems.
